A ZEN APOLOGUE Cesare De Silvestri
Once upon a time the great Guru O. came to city of Y. Immediately a crowd of ardent followers gathered at the temple to listen to his teachings. O. told his disciples : "The temple is dirty. Clean it". the enthusiastic pupils earnestly starden cleaning and in short time the temple was neat and tidy. On the following day Guru O. gave the same order: "The temple is dirty. Clean it." The disciples went back to cleaning. At the end of the day the temple shone. On the third morning the great O. for the third time asked his followers to clean the temple. Puzzled-but full of zeal-the pupils started all over again. The temple was now spotless. Day after day the great Guru kept repeating his disconcerting order. At first the disciples thought it was some kind of test, then they got tired and started grumbling and questioning their master's wisdom, finally -sick of the humble task -many left. Days went by, and followers -disgusted with their guru-went away but the great O. kept giving the same order. One day the guru went into the temple. There were only a few disciples left, dutifully washing , brushing and sweeping the immaculate temple. The great O.smiled and said :"Good. Now that we have got rid of the rubbish, we can start working".His teachings were truly good and the few left disciples turned out be excellent learners, they made quick progress and they became famous gurus themselves. Si tratta di una storia tradizionale zen ma va tenuto presente che dopo tanti anni e tante ripetizioni potrebbe essere diversa dalla versione originale. L'apologo è tuttavia breve e molto interessante. Come spesso accade negli insegnamenti zen, contiene un messaggio nascosto che va ben oltre le pure apparenze del racconto. Quindi mi sembra molto adatto ai miei allievi. Anzi, a tutti gli allievi di qualsiasi corso di apprendimento. Specialmente a quelli che si scoraggiano subito, che non accettano l'incomprensione che sempre precede la comprensione nel processo della conoscenza. E a quelli che non accettano la fatica, o che vogliono raggiungere degli obiettivi ambiziosi senza essere disposti veramente a pagare il prezzo di applicazione e fatica che questo implica. Insomma,è un apologo che troverò utile fino a quando continuerò ad insegnare.
